At a time when technological innovation is held in the highest regard, the long-term survival of slow-making craft practices face survival challenges not unlike our flora and fauna - at risk of being categorised rare, endangered, critically endangered or extinct.
Rare Crafts is a homage to the manual dexterity of the artists and deep understanding of the materials and techniques, both traditional and non-traditional, used in craft practices that often speak to the place of their creation. Rare Crafts is a celebration of the hand-made, featuring artists and artisans working with diverse materials including Neil Turner, Stewart Scambler, Nien Schwarz, Yindjibarndi artist Katie West, Ben Kovascky, Sujora Conrad, Ruth Halbert, Bob Mackie, Carol Littlefair, Nicholas Compton, Leonie Oakes, Susie Marwick, Jill Parnell, Yuko Takahashi and Elaine Clocherty [in collaboration with Marion Kickett and Ailsa Blackwood].
Rare Crafts is part of the 2021 Indian Ocean Craft Triennial program.
