India Flint will be offering an intensive site-specific class based at Gallery 152 Creative Space in York. With a focus on the poetics of place through immersion in the local landscape, the class is tailored to explore and respond to the locality, in this case the township of York, the Avon River and its surrounds, while covering the fundamentals of bundle dyeing on both textiles and paper.
Weather permitting we spend time outdoors listening, observing and gathering. Using cloth, stitch, paper and dyes derived from locally gathered plant matter (weeds and windfalls) along with drawing, writing, mark-making and paper-folding techniques (some developed especially for the class) we develop a journey-cloth and build an intricate workbook mapping the journey of our time together.
We will record our experiences through drawing and stitching as well as through poetry and story, developing a vocabulary of marks from the landscape and gathering a rich resource of words and images to take forward into other work.
Most materials will be supplied: participants have only to bring themselves, a camera [if they wish], needles and scissors, a selection of undyed thread, notebook and pencil, sturdy footwear and comfortable clothing.
India will be giving an artist talk at 4pm Sunday 17th . For those who wish to attend, the fee is included in the workshop fee.
York is WA’s first inland town and was established in 1831. It was the first town in WA to gain protection by being listed on the register of the National Trust and this has preserved its character, particularly along the main street Avon Terrace. It is located in the Avon Valley 100kms east of the Perth CBD off Great Eastern Highway.
The workshop will take place in and around Gallery 152 which provides opportunities for meditation and quiet enjoyment, with beautiful river walks and heritage walks in close proximity. The on site accommodation is based in an 1850s cottage with beds (bunks) available in shared rooms. We also have limited private accommodation available. The bathrooms and kitchen facilities are common for all accommodation and there is an onsite laundry and plenty of onsite parking. All linen is provided but we recommend bringing your own bathrobe.
Accommodation will be allocated on a first come/first serve basis. There are off site accommodation options available close by. Contact us for more information.
